History of Andhra Pradesh and Telangana
Formation of Andhra State: In 1953, Prime Minister Nehru agreed to create Andhra State from Madras State after Potti Sriramulu's death by fasting.
Formation of Andhra Pradesh: In 1956, Andhra Pradesh was formed by merging Andhra State with Hyderabad State. However, discontent arose between Andhra and Telangana regions.
Telangana Agitations: The agitations for a separate Telangana state began in 1969 and continued till 2014.
Telangana Statehood: In 2014, Telangana was carved out of Andhra Pradesh as a separate state.
After Bifurcation
Benefits: People of both states can address their concerns independently.
Local issues are given more focus.
The greatest benefit is that though there are two separate States today, there is little animosity among the people.
Challenges: Some promises made in the Andhra Pradesh Reorganisation Act are pending implementation. Andhra Pradesh lacks a permanent capital.
An Indian Institute of Technology in Tirupati, an Indian Institute of Management in Visakhapatnam, and an All-India Institute of Medical Sciences in Mangalagiri have been set up, but projects such as the South Coast Railway Zone in Visakhapatnam remain in limbo in Andhra Pradesh.
