I. What is BRICS?
The BRICS is a group of countries that work together on political, economic, and social issues. It mainly represents nations from the Global South—developing countries that want a stronger voice in global affairs.
In short, BRICS is a platform for cooperation among major developing countries to make the world order more balanced.
II. Who Are the Members of BRICS?
Origin of the Term
The word “BRIC” was created in 2001 by an economist from Goldman Sachs, a global bank.
It stood for Brazil, Russia, India, and China, known for their fast-growing economies.
Current Members (11 Countries Total)
Original Members: Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa.
New Members (added in 2023–24): Egypt, Ethiopia, Indonesia, Iran, Saudi Arabia, and the United Arab Emirates (UAE).
How BRICS Expanded Over Time:
2006: The four original countries (BRIC) met for the first time.
2011: South Africa joined—turning BRIC into BRICS.
2023 (Johannesburg Summit): Six new countries invited.
2024 (Kazan Summit): Expansion officially began, and a new “Partner Country” category was introduced.

BRICS countries want to make global systems more fair and inclusive. Here’s what they work toward:
Better Global Governance: Make institutions like the UN, IMF, World Bank, and WTO more democratic and representative.
More Cooperation: Encourage economic, political, and cultural collaboration between member countries.
Sustainable Growth: Focus on green, inclusive development that benefits ordinary people.
Empowering the Global South: Give developing countries a stronger say in world affairs.
V. How Does BRICS Work?
A. Informal Yet Coordinated
BRICS doesn’t have a permanent headquarters like the UN.
All decisions are made by consensus—meaning everyone must agree.
B. Three Main Areas of Focus
Politics & Security—Dialogue on world peace and stability.
Economy & Finance—Trade, investment, and development.
People-to-People (P2P)—Culture, education, and civil society links.
C. Rotating Presidency
Each year, a different country leads BRICS, in the B-R-I-C-S order.
The leader country hosts the annual summit and sets the year’s agenda.
Brazil is the BRICS Chair in 2025.
A new rotation system may come soon to include the 6 new members.
D. Membership Types
Members: The 11 main countries.
Partner Countries: Invited nations that take part in selected meetings (e.g., Belarus, Cuba, Nigeria, Vietnam, etc.)
