Coordinates and strengthens economic intelligence and enforcement activities under the Ministry of Finance
Works with other law enforcement agencies like the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) and Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI)
Structure:
Headed by a Director General with the designation of Special Secretary to the Government of India
Comprises three wings:
Administration & Coordination Wing (acts as the Secretariat to the Economic Intelligence Council)
COFEPOSA Wing (deals with detentions under the COFEPOSA Act for economic offenses)
Operations Wing (responsible for intelligence gathering and analysis)
Recent Developments:
Launched the "Automated Search Portal" in collaboration with State Bank of India (SBI) to enable PSBs to instantly verify borrower history and non-performing assets (NPAs) for faster loan decisions.
Plays a significant role in India's efforts to combat economic crimes and protect financial stability.
