The Central Economic Intelligence Bureau (CEIB) is a crucial agency within the Indian Ministry of Finance, specializing in gathering and analyzing information related to economic offenses and financial crimes. Here are some key details about CEIB:

Established: 1985

Function:

  • Gathers, analyzes, and shares intelligence on economic offenses (e.g., smuggling, tax evasion, money laundering)

  • Acts as a central repository for economic offense records

  • Provides intelligence reports to Public Sector Banks (PSBs) on prospective borrowers with loans exceeding ₹50 crore

  • Coordinates and strengthens economic intelligence and enforcement activities under the Ministry of Finance

  • Works with other law enforcement agencies like the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) and Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI)

Structure:

  • Headed by a Director General with the designation of Special Secretary to the Government of India

  • Comprises three wings:

  • Administration & Coordination Wing (acts as the Secretariat to the Economic Intelligence Council)

  • COFEPOSA Wing (deals with detentions under the COFEPOSA Act for economic offenses)

  • Operations Wing (responsible for intelligence gathering and analysis)

Recent Developments:

  • Launched the "Automated Search Portal" in collaboration with State Bank of India (SBI) to enable PSBs to instantly verify borrower history and non-performing assets (NPAs) for faster loan decisions.

  • Plays a significant role in India's efforts to combat economic crimes and protect financial stability.
